Marriage and Family Talk:
For Third and Fourth Graders

1. GOD’S PLAN: Man and woman leave their parents and become married. The marriage is started by making a LIFETIME commitment before God and before other people. They join their bodies together as a sign of their commitment to each other (Genesis 2:24). GOD’S PLAN FOR MARRIAGE AND JOINING IS VERY WONDERFUL, AND THE ONLY ONE THAT WILL WORK!!
2. God also sometimes gives the gift of children by the joining of a husband’s and wife’s bodies.
3. The joining of a husband’s and wife’s bodies is enjoyable and helps them to feel closer together.
4. Satan, by tempting to sin, has caused many people to go against God’s plan for marriage. Men and women who aren’t married join their bodies just for the pleasure and not because they commit themselves to each other for marriage. This is called LUST. Many people today say this joining before marriage is OK (you may even be taught in school it’s OK). But God says lust is wrong: 1 John 2:15-16. People are HURT by this joining before marriage-like any sin, it puts a wall between you and God and also puts a wall between the man and woman who do it. This joining together before marriage can also cause horrible diseases like AIDS. God tells you to flee lust: 2 Timothy 2:22.
5. Your body will start to change in one to two years, to make it ready for marriage and having children. This is called puberty. Girl’s bodies also change during the upcoming years so they can be ready for marriage and having babies. During this time of life, (also called adolescence) you will go through many other changes and begin to make decisions for yourself. The most important decision is obeying Jesus closely.

One of the things you may struggle with during adolescence is controlling your temper. You need to control it; otherwise you will be defenseless (Proverbs 25:28). Causes of temper are talked about in: James 3:16; 1 Peter 5:5. The way you should be is talked about in James 3:17, Ephesians 4:2, and James 1:19-20.
6. Your body is God’s temple, with Him inside you. You should obey Him with your body (Romans 12:1). This includes waiting for the joining with a woman till you are married.
7. You should only think of marrying a Christian woman (or man) that want s really obey Jesus. Otherwise, she (or he) will tell you not to obey Jesus all the time. The Bible says to not marry a woman who doesn’t have Christ in her heart. 2 Corinthians 6:14-15. Judges 16:4-22 tells about the problems that Samson had due to marrying Delilah who was not an Israelite and who did not love God. 1 Kings 11:1-13 talks about Solomon’s problem with other women and the problems it caused him AND many other people.
8. One reason Mom and Dad have a happy marriage is because WE FOLLOWED GOD’S PLAN!! We waited for marriage to join our bodies and we both really love Jesus and want to obey Him. WE HAVE MADE A LIFETIME COMMITMENT TO EACH OTHE RAN GOD IS HELPING US TO KEEP THAT COMMITMENT!!
9. ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS TO ADD AT FIFTH GRADE: NO KISSING girls until ninth grade, at least. No hugging girls. Handholding is the most you should do.
