No one could have prophesied how the discovery of plasma-flux induced fusion power (or plasma-fusion for short) would change science. Or more importantly for Sam, how it would change world politics.

It was now the year 2028. The “Italian Empire” firmly controlled the world. Older people around the world hated the Italians for their strong rule and national pride. What irked Sam was that children, like Christine, were now used to Italian rule and even liked Italian leaders. Unfortunately, the United States did not have any current leaders worth admiring. In fact, the two long-entrenched political parties had stymied the development of any strong, good leaders for many years and the country was in decline.

In contrast, Italy had made a strong recovery since the political and social crises of the early 1990’s. The country had been sunk in despair when a tragic event provided the spark that launched the Italian renewal.

In 2003, the Mafia had gunned down a Sicilian named Guido Mariucci. What made the assassination so cruel, was that the Mafia did it when Guido was attending the law school graduation ceremony of his twenty-three year old son, Ricco.

A month later, Ricco made a blood pact with six other Sicilian classmates. They vowed to destroy the Mafia or die trying. Each of the six classmates then recruited and lead six others for the same do or die mission. These thirty-six men also recruited six men apiece to carry out the same pledge. All 259 men infiltrated the Mafia.

Amazingly, within five years these “Men of The Pact” had destroyed the Italian Mafia. They used a shadowy mixture of legal and illegal means to accomplish this feat, although none of them would divulge the specific tactics they had used.

Complete dedication was important in the Men of The Pact’s success. However, Interpol and other police organizations believed the cunning and genius of Ricco Mariucci was even more important. Hundreds of Mafioso disappeared or were found dead. Others were tied up and dumped alive on the doorsteps of police headquarters.

Police found these terrified men with bound hands clutching a paper identifying them and their crimes. Each paper was always signed in blood with the letters “MOTP”. Italians gradually became aware of the Men of The Pact’s achievements, and acclaimed them throughout the country.

With his initial goal accomplished, Mariucci steered the Men of The Pact’s activities into the political arena. He founded the MOTP party and slated each of the 259 members to run for specific national offices. The MOTP party campaigned with a vibrant mix of youthful enthusiasm and Italian nationalism. They pledged to increase the honesty and efficiency of the government.

The keystone of their platform was a pledge to install a United States style of government with a senate, house of representatives, a president and a strong judicial system. This was appealing to older Italians because they had seen their parliamentary-style government change leadership almost yearly since 1945.

The endurance and dedication forged in the war against the Mafia served the MOTP party members well in their political work. Also, the existing political parties were struggling with inexperienced leaders because their previous leaders had been jailed in the sweeping corruption trials of the 1990’s.

In the year 2010, the MOTP party gained 30% of the seats in parliament with Mariucci himself taking the seat for Rome.
